STUDENT WORK

Tectonic Studio / 3D4M

Project Location: University of Washington, Seattle

Studio Professor: Dave Miller

Collaboration: Joe David and Ben Smith

Economy of means: The new 3D art’s facility will be funded in stages and the structure is designed to accommodate incremental growth.  With a large superstructure that can be erected immediately to shelter glass blowing activities from Seattle rains, each of the structure’s bays can be built-out incrementally.  The roof shape is designed to optimize consistent northern light, to funnel rainwater into a cistern at each end of the building, to optimize ventilation for kilns, and to create an open and welcoming public facade to an otherwise hermetically sealed compound of aging structures.  The new structure creates a central informal ‘work yard’ while maintaining the necessary vehicular access.
